
Can Wales Ride the Tidal Energy Wave?
The United Kingdom possesses one of Europe’s strongest marine energy resources. More than 12,000 kilometres of coastline surround the nation, creating significant opportunities for tidal power generation. Wales occupies a strategic position within this landscape. The Severn Estuary alone has one of the world’s highest tidal ranges, reaching up to 14 metres in some locations. As the UK pursues net-zero targets and energy security, interest in harnessing predictable tidal resources has returned to policy discussions.
Revisiting the Severn Barrage Debate
For decades, the Severn Barrage has remained one of Britain’s most debated renewable energy proposals. The concept involves constructing a large barrier across the Severn Estuary to generate electricity from tidal movements.
Supporters argue that the project could provide substantial low-carbon electricity for millions of homes. Unlike wind and solar power, tidal energy follows predictable patterns. Energy output can therefore be forecast with greater accuracy.
